History
It
all began with a Delhi family’s desperation in getting
help for one of their family members suffering from severe
memory loss. It was clear that to provide physical, emotional
and scientific help there must be a support group locally,
which resulted in the formation of the Delhi Chapter of Alzheimer’s
& Related Disorders of Society of India (ARDSI) in March
1994.
Mrs. Nirmala M. Narula, took over as President of the Delhi
Chapter in October 2001. In response to growing public need,
she started a HelpLine. A panel of Consultants - including
doctors and neurologists was formed to advise, counsel and
provide relevant information to callers on-line. A memory
clinic was established simultaneously, within the department
of Neurology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)
where patients were referred by ARDSI for memory testing and
treatment.
Initially we were funded by HelpAge India and still receive
substantial funding and support.
Today we have over 400 families with an elderly member suffering
from memory loss and many diagnosed cases of Alzheimer’s
disease on our register.
ARDSI is the first Afro-Asian National Dementia Organization to get full membership in Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI), London (U.K.). The 6th National Conference was organized by the Alzheimer's Society, Delhi Chapter in November, 2000 and 12th National Conference in November, 2006 at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. National Consultative Meeting of Experts on “National Dementia Strategy” was held on 30-31 January, 2009 at Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi.
